In Greek, the word “Orchesis” means “the art of movement,” and when given that assignment, CdM’s Orchesis never disappoints. From upbeat, energy-bringing performances that electrify the audience to emotion-filled lyrical pieces that tell powerful, unspoken stories, these dancers transform the stage into something unforgettable.
Ava Batram, 10, attended the Orchesis performance, Viva Las Vegas, on Friday, 27 February. She shared that her favorite piece was Bitter Truth, as she enjoys contemporary dance and appreciates the fluidity and expression of the movements. The overall atmosphere of the performance, along with the thoughtfully designed costumes, especially captured her attention because they complemented the song choice so well. Batram felt that the dances strongly reflected the show’s theme by portraying the energy and spirit of Las Vegas, including references to poker, casinos, and the irony of spontaneous weddings in the city. These ideas were further inspired by videos shown before each performance, which helped set the scene. Overall, she described the show as exceptionally well organised, praising the dancers’ professionalism, the carefully coordinated lighting and technical elements, and the way each piece flowed seamlessly together to support the central theme.
For senior Willa Baker, this year’s show means more to her than any other, as one of her final performances with Orchesis, the night carries the weight of years of memories, growth, and friendships built both in and out of the studio. Along with the meaning, Baker commented on how much effort her team has had to put into a show: “Months of preparation for us brought long rehearsals, tiny moments of stress, and the kind of nerve-wracking excitement that only comes with wanting everything to be perfect.”
Looking back on her time in Orchesis, Baker has watched the team evolve not only in skill, but in unity — growing closer with every practice and performance, “especially with my sister on the team”. The bonds she’s formed with her teammates have shaped her high school experience, turning rehearsals into lasting memories. As she prepares to graduate, Baker plans to carry the discipline and the leadership skills she’s gained from Orchesis with her into college and whatever comes next, knowing the lessons learned on stage will extend far beyond it.
From Act 1 to Act 2, the Orchesis dancers consistently performed at an exceptional level, showcasing their organisation, precision, and undeniable talent. Their commitment to excellence was evident in every routine, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. Throughout this performance and in past shows, Orchesis has also shared the stage with the school’s Brochesis team, which features members of the CdM Boys Football Team. This collaboration not only highlights the inclusive and spirited nature of the company but also reinforces the strong sense of community within the school.
