This past Sunday, March 1st, Corona del Mar High School put on its fourth successful annual car show. Cars ranged from decades old to brand new, each with its own unique origin story. The event included free donuts and coffee courtesy of ASB, as well as vendors such as Moon Goat Coffee roasters. Optima batteries helped sponsor the event, and they gave out a free Optima car battery to the Peoples choice awarded car and free Optima merchandise to the raffle ticket winner. Judges for the car show included Newport Beach Mayor Kleiman and NMUSD board of education member Carol Crane.
The car show is a student-run event that was originally started by students in 2023. ASB has a specific committee dedicated to the car show each year. They reach out to vendors, car owners, and community members in order to make the event a success. The Activities director at CdM, Michael Dobyns, provided some insight on what steps ASB takes to run the car show: “For the car show, the students start dedicating themselves very early. It starts with a date…you need to look at the time of year and look at other events happening in Newport.” Dobyns continued, “They contact all car show participants from the past years with a save the date…then they contact all the vendors, set up a map of the event, and contact programs at CdM for performances such as Song and Drumline.” It is no small feat for a group of high school students in their busy high school lives to put on an event as successful as the car show.
The car show was a great start to a busy month at CdM.
