At CdM, many platforms advocate for student mental health and wellness, one of which is the wellness committee in ASB. Once a month, this committee puts on a Wellness Wednesday at lunch in the ASB room, creating a safe space on campus for students to come and enjoy a treat with their peers. This month the Wellness Wednesday is on Wednesday, January 13th, and they are handing out candy!
The Wellness committee extends beyond monthly Wellness Wednesdays to promoting the Kings Cove space on campus as well. When speaking to Kaitlyn Shumlas, the junior class president and a member of the wellness committee, she shared her committee’s main goal: “As students, we want to consider our peers’ mental health, especially in stressful months, and want to advocate for that.” Shumlas also explained the purpose of the Wellness Wednesdays, “they give students something to look forward to, whether it’s doing an activity or just hanging out in the ASB room, it builds community, and it’s a nice opportunity to de-stress.”
Along with Wellness Wednesday, the spirit committee has monthly Welcome Wednesdays where a designated sports team (picked by asb) hands out donuts and coffee to students walking into campus. Becca Tomac, a member of the Spirit committee who is in charge of the Welcome Wednesdays, shared the behind-the-scenes on planning them: “We typically try to incorporate more than just sports team and we try to strategically base who will do the Welcome Wednesday based on which sports, clubs, and programs are in their season.” Tomac also shared the main goal of the Welcome Wednesday, “I think it helps students realize school can be a place to have fun, and donuts and coffee are a good pick me up in the morning.”
Between the Wellness and Welcome Wednesdays, students have the opportunity to take their minds off their stressful lives and reset.
