Across the United States, thousands of protests were held in support of the “No Kings” movement on Saturday, March 28th. Often labeled #NoKingsDay, the movement emerged in early June 2025 based on the principle that “power belongs to the people.” This coordinated effort was initiated by the 50501 Movement, which stands for “50 states, 50 protests, 1 movement.” The primary aim of the organizers was to protest what they describe as authoritarian actions and overreach by President Donald Trump and the current administration. The protests have focused on policies related to civil rights and the actions of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). However, policy supporters argue that such measures are necessary for national security, immigration enforcement, and economic priorities.
Even in Newport Beach, hundreds rallied together at the intersection of Jamboree Road and Pacific Coast Highway at the latest “No Kings” protest. This high turnout is particularly significant due to the community’s reputation for Republican and conservative leanings. According to the California Secretary of State’s Office, in 2024, 47.6% of Newport Beach voters registered as Republican, by far the largest political affiliation in the city. The conspicuous gathering on PCH, a high-traffic spot, suggested a significant level of local engagement by residents who felt compelled to speak out about current events. A parent at CdMHS who participated in the rally but asked to remain anonymous notes that, “not everybody has to agree all the time…but showing up to the things that [seem] meaningful to you…[is] really important.” The “No Kings” movement is not necessarily limited to liberals and Democrats, as some see it as an opportunity to encourage conversation and dialogue regardless of political affiliation. “I want to observe and be a part of the conversation [without creating] division,” adds the CdMHS parent, emphasizing that understanding other perspectives is valuable, and even though other parties may have their own reasons for coming, they are uniting together for a common cause.
Freedom of speech and nonviolent action are emphasized on the NoKings.org website. “Being peaceful and respectful…[is] super important, and going with other people is smart,” mentions the CdMHS parent. To further ensure the safety of participants, law enforcement has been present for several of the “No Kings” Day protests in Newport Beach, and no recent incidents of violence have been reported. Many predict that the next No Kings Day will be held on July 4th, 2026, but an official date has not yet been announced.
