October is one of the hottest months of the year in California. During the school day, the temperature can climb into the eighties, and the UV index can rise above 10. Shishir Iyer, a writer for Medium, said, “In a lot of coastal California cities like San Francisco or Monterey, September and October are the warmest months, warmer than June or July.” It has often been said that when school starts in the fall in California, the temperatures climb the highest. Rebecca Linsday and Luann Dahlman, from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, say that the earth is warming because “The global average surface temperature is an indicator of the state of Earth’s energy balance: how much sunlight it absorbs minus how much heat it radiates back to space. When these amounts are the same, Earth’s average surface temperature remains steady. When they are out of balance, Earth cools or warms.” The temperatures are rising this fall, along with the UV index, sometimes reaching 10 or 11 during the school day. The heat can have many impacts on students’ lifestyles and performance, ranging from clothing choice to work ethic.
A CdM student was asked about her opinion on the weather in the fall. Juliet Heidari, a ninth grader at CdM, says that, “Regardless of the heat, I love October because all the green leaves turn beautiful shades of orange, red, and brown, and it just makes my day to see the landscape turn to fall. Although the heat can impact my productivity at times, it reminds me of summer, which makes me happy. Sometimes the clothing options I have at school are a bit limited, but I know that as the seasons change, my clothing also will.” Heidari’s response echoes that the weather in the fall, although it is warm, reminds her of summer, which brings happiness into the fall season.
Due to global warming, the temperatures in the fall are steadily increasing each year. The surface temperature of the Earth and the way the heat radiates can heavily influence temperatures in the fall and can lead to warm months in September, October, and November. Although the heat is strong, it brings summer vibes and happy feelings because it resembles summer. As the planet heats up each fall, it is vital to remember to use renewable energy sources to slow the emissions of harmful gases into the atmosphere, to slow down the heating of the planet.
