Music plays a significant role in the lives of members of Generation Z. As Grammy-winning artist Billie Eilish noted, “music is the way that a lot of young people say the things they’re too scared to say out loud. It’s like a diary that you can share with millions of people at once. For our generation especially, music feels like this safe space where we can admit we’re lonely, anxious, sad, and confused. All the things that everyone feels but nobody talks about. When you hear a song that says exactly what you’re feeling, it makes you realize you’re not alone. I think that’s why music means so much to Gen Z: it’s comfort, it’s honesty, it’s connection. It makes you feel understood when the world doesn’t.” According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry Global Music Report 2024, “music is an essential daily activity for Gen Z: globally, listeners spend an average of 20.7 hours per week listening to music, with Gen Z representing the most intensive listening demographic; over 90% of Gen Z engages with music every day across streaming and video platforms; short-form video apps like TikTok and YouTube Shorts account for more than 40% of all music discovery among users aged 16–24, surpassing radio and paid streaming algorithm discovery combined; nearly 75% of Gen Z follow at least one artist on social platforms, turning fandom into a social identity activity; more than 60% report sharing music links or clips with friends weekly, making music a primary tool of social connection; over 70% say they want closer, more direct relationships with artists through livestreams, comments, or exclusive content, while almost 50% of Gen Z report spending money on concerts or artist merchandise, even as streaming remains their main listening method.” Joon Kim, a senior at Corona del Mar High School, discussed how, “I love using music as a tool to relax, calm down, and have a good time. I enjoy having many playlists that I can listen to depending on the vibe.” Music is not just a hobby for many; it is a lifestyle and something that people can use to connect, relieve stress, and improve their overall well-being.
