Throughout high school, students face a wide range of challenges. Whether academic, extracurricular, athletic, or social, the pressure can feel overwhelming at times. As expectations increase, many students find themselves learning how to balance responsibilities while also managing stress.
CdM junior Ellie Singletary shares that one of her biggest challenges has been keeping up with rigorous classwork. “The biggest challenge was keeping up with all of my APs in junior year,” she explains. “It made me extremely stressed, but it also taught me how to deal with stress and how to be more efficient and productive.” She notes that academic pressure has intensified over time, especially as college becomes a more immediate goal. “Grade pressure has greatly increased, with everyone focusing on getting into college since we’re in junior year.”
To cope, Singletary relies on support from those around her and careful planning. “I talk to my friends and family, and they reassure me that everything will be okay,” she says. “I also plan out assignments so nothing gets backed up.” While she believes high school helps students develop useful habits like time management, she feels it falls short in preparing students for real-world responsibilities. She also mentions reducing excessive homework, noting that too much can take away from meaningful studying.
Similarly, CdM junior Mia Hayton highlights the difficulty of adjusting to more challenging classes. “The biggest challenge I’ve faced has been going from doing well to failing tests,” she says. “As I’ve taken more rigorous classes, I’ve had to learn how to recover quickly when I’m struggling.” She describes a constant pressure to succeed, paired with the realization that failure is sometimes part of growth.
Hayton copes by staying proactive and seeking help. “I remind myself that I’ll get through whatever I’m struggling with, and I reach out to teachers when I need support,” she explains. Despite the challenges, she values the lessons high school provides, particularly in time and stress management. She emphasizes that each student’s experience is different and encourages others to recognize their limits.
Ultimately, while high school presents many obstacles, it also teaches valuable life skills. Through these experiences, students learn resilience, adaptability, and how to navigate challenges that will extend far beyond the classroom.
