Getting late-night snacks or meals is something many high school students have in common. From fast food runs to ice cream stops, there’s no shortage of options. As the school year intensifies, especially around AP exams and finals, CdM students often turn to late-night food to take a break or just get out of the house. Whether it’s a weekend hangout or a quick trip after a long day, late-night food has become a routine part of student life.
CdM junior Kayla Yomtoubian shares her go-to spot, Salt & Straw. “I love going to Salt & Straw! I always go with my brother after dinner, and I really enjoy it because there are so many interesting new flavors and unlimited samples,” she says. While her order changes depending on what’s available, she often looks forward to limited-edition flavors or cookie dough. “I usually go around 10-11 p.m., and it’s after dinner when we’re craving something sweet.” She adds that while she enjoys all types of late-night spots, dessert places are her favorite since they’re quick and easy. Some of her best memories come from going out with friends, especially after events. “Getting In-N-Out Burger with my friends after a school dance is really fun. It’s a nice change of pace after a long night.”
Similarly, CdM junior Rya Rydalch says her top choice is In-N-Out. “My go-to late-night spot is In-N-Out because it’s consistent and cheap,” she explains. Her usual order is a double-double protein style with no tomatoes, grilled onions, and fries. For Rydalch, late-night food is often a reward. “I’ll go anywhere between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. If I’ve had a mentally challenging week, I’ll treat myself. Sometimes my friends and I also go after studying.” While she enjoys a mix of options, she admits she’s “usually always down for a sweet treat.” One of her most memorable experiences was after a concert. “We got back from LA at midnight and went to In-N-Out; it was the best experience of my life. I felt reborn.”
Whether it’s for studying, socializing, or just taking a break, late-night food is a simple but meaningful part of student life. It’s not just about the food, it’s about the moments that come with it.
