On March 21st, 2026, Nebraska Men’s Basketball made history, securing their first appearance in the NCAA’s March Madness’ Sweet 16 after an exhilarating game against Vanderbilt. The Huskers had previously made eight appearances in the NCAA tournament before making their Sweet 16 debut, a victorious feeling for the Huskers, who came out on top by two points. This season, Nebraska has been on a historical roll, this being the 49th win for them the last two seasons, which is the most the Huskers have ever won in the span of two years. Since the 2025 College Basketball Crown, Nebraska has won six straight postseason games.
Nebraska was dominating the majority of the game until the Huskers fell off in the second half, Vanderbilt leading 67-62 with scarcely five minutes left on the clock. Shortly after, the Huskers scored six consecutive points to secure the lead, until Vanderbilt shot a three-pointer to regain their lead at 72-70. Immediately following, Rienk Mast, one of Nebraska’s star players, tied the game 72-72 with less than a minute remaining until the Huskers secured a defensive stop and Pryce Sandfort found Braden Frager, enabling Frager’s game-winning layup.
With 2.2 seconds on the clock, Vanderbilt’s Tyler Tanner attempted to secure a three-pointer, a shot that circled the rim of the hoop, nearly swooshing in, but bounced off as the buzzer went off. Following the near-win for the Commodores, Tanner fell to the floor in defeat as the crowd roared in the stadium, Nebraska history officially made. Sam Hoiberg, who had eight points and six assists that game, commented during his interview with ESPN, “My heart sank as that ball went into the hoop, and then it went out. And I think it took half a second to register that it didn’t go in, and then I just screamed in elation.”
Freshman Ché Januszek, who has been following this year’s March Madness, states, “I feel very proud of Nebraska for making it to the Sweet 16 for the first time ever because that is a really big accomplishment. Especially as the underdog against Vanderbilt, it’s an amazing thing to achieve.” Nebraska was ranked the No.4 seed, whilst Vanderbilt was No.5, yet Vanderbilt has previously been in the Sweet 16 14 times, making it an incredible feat for Nebraska to end up on top.
As the Huskers advance further into March Madness, their momentum only increases, continuing to make history further into the tournament. Batting Iowa on March 26th, who won against the Florida Gators by one point on March 22nd, is expected to be an exciting face-off in Texas.
