Every year on April 22nd, Earth Day is celebrated in the United States. The day promotes the use of recyclable materials, renewable energy sources, and care for our planet. Originally, in 1970, the day focused on bringing environmental issues to the forefront of politics. The holiday led to the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency, which brings awareness to human impacts on the environment. The agency enforces environmental regulations, such as water quality standards, and establishes foundations for environmental research. The day also led to the creation of several acts, such as the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act, both of which inspire action to protect the environment. While the day began in the US, in 1990 it expanded globally and is celebrated by over 200 million people.
A Wisconsin Senator, Gaylord Nelson, established Earth Day in April of 1970. As an active environmentalist, he believed that everyone should have access to clean air and water, and established many environmental-related acts, such as the Wilderness Act. In 1990, he received the Ansel Adams Conservation Award. Later in 1995, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his actions.
Children, teens, and adults can support Earth Day by participating in local contests, recycling, being mindful of waste, using renewable water sources, and investing in electric cars. Many environmental organizations also hold Earth Day writing and art contests, where kids from around the area compete for prizes and special recognition.
CdM student Gabrielle Landy feels it is vital to spread the holiday’s awareness around the country. She said, “I like to celebrate Earth Day to help raise awareness about our environment. As global warming and fossil fuel emissions increase, using electric cars and purchasing from sustainable brands are just some of the many ways to help our planet. If we all contribute to small acts, we can help the earth become a better place.” Landy emphasizes the importance of using recyclable materials and renewable energy sources. She believes that if we all pitch in by recycling on Earth Day and every day, we can decrease global warming, helping the environment.
If we all start recycling and using renewable energy sources, we can contribute to the sustainability of our environment. Support our Earth!
