The foods we eat can have a direct impact on our moods. Eva Selhub, MD, who writes for Harvard Health Publishing, states that “put simply, what you eat directly affects the structure and function of your brain and, ultimately, your mood.” Think about it for a second; how does eating food affect personal identity? Whether it’s for religious purposes, body goals, or simply for pleasure, everyone has food that creates their identities and memories throughout their lives. Many believe that when they are eating enjoyable, nutritious food, their mood becomes more lighthearted and joyful. The reason people tend to feel better when eating nutritious and enjoyable foods is serotonin. Serotonin acts as a neurotransmitter and a hormone in the brain and digestive system. It helps to regulate sleep, mood, appetite, and the digestive system. When eating specific foods, the amino acid tryptophan is created, which makes more serotonin in the body, regulating mood.
Food can have a major impact on studies, sports, focus, and lifestyle. Ninth grader Lilly Gosling was asked about nutritious food affecting her mood; she said, “When I eat nutritious foods, I feel happier and healthier because I know it is healthy and won’t harm me because there are no artificial ingredients in it!” This response proves that the healthier the diet, the happier the mood. Not to mention, better quality food also gives individuals more energy to fully participate in their lives. Freshman Charlotte Brunk also agrees with this belief, explaining, “Food makes me happy because the flavor is very good, and I am always looking forward to meals and snacks.” She enjoys tasty snacks that give her the energy to actively engage in school and sports. As evidenced by CdM students and backed by science, healthy and enjoyable foods clearly have an impact on lifestyles.
Food is an essential part of everyone’s lives: it nurtures identities, brings happiness, gathers communities, and helps the planet. As fall begins, warm comfort foods shared with family and friends on cloudy nights will be a staple as 2025 nears its end.
