The medical field offers a wide range of careers, including doctors, nurses, specialists, and many others who work together to care for patients. As high school students begin preparing for their futures, they are faced with important decisions about college, majors, and potential career paths. While many students are drawn to fields such as law, business, and finance, medicine continues to stand out as a popular and meaningful choice. In today’s society, the interest in medical careers has grown, and at Corona del Mar High School, many students are beginning to envision themselves in healthcare roles.
CdM junior Ellie Kosoff shared that her passion for science played a major role in shaping her interest in medicine. “As I became older, I realized that pursuing a career in medicine is the path for me to make my passion for helping people become a reality,” she explained. Kosoff credits much of her inspiration to her pediatrician, who has served as a mentor and role model. By allowing Kosoff to visit her office and learn firsthand about the profession, she has provided valuable insight into what a medical career truly looks like. Kosoff admires the supportive environment her pediatrician creates for patients and hopes to one day do the same. However, she also pointed out that medical shows and social media often make the field appear more glamorous than it truly is, sometimes overlooking the long hours, emotional challenges, and intense workload that come with the job.
CdM junior Maxwell Tran emphasized that medicine should be pursued out of genuine passion rather than financial motivation. He believes that entering the medical field without a true love for science and helping others can be harmful, both to the professional and to the patients. Tran noted that many students are drawn to medicine because it connects closely with STEM classes and offers a stable future. While these are important factors, he stressed that success in healthcare requires dedication, compassion, and a strong commitment to patient care.
Overall, the medical field has become increasingly appealing to teenagers as they explore their futures. While it offers meaningful work and long-term stability, it also demands perseverance, empathy, and hard work. For students considering this path, understanding both the rewards and challenges is essential in deciding whether medicine is truly the right fit for them.
