After three straight weeks of devastating losses, the Sea Kings turned it around last Friday night at Davidson Field with a crushing defeat over the Tesoro Titans. Corona del Mar put up an impressive 44 points in comparison to Tesoro’s mere 14 points. Friday Night’s Despicable Me-themed Kings Krew game doubled as Jersey Night, a long-standing tradition where each player gifts their jersey to a date who wears it to the game. The student section, lined with minion costumes and jerseys, created an animated and lively atmosphere.
The Sea Kings started strong in the first quarter, quickly gaining momentum. Wyatt Lucas ignited the crowd with a cross-field run that brought CdM to Tesoro’s 2-yard line, resulting in a touchdown by Dorsett Stecker. CdM closed the quarter out with a lead of 14-0, effectively setting the stage for a very successful game ahead.
As is customary, halftime performances such as pep squad, color guard, and drumline elevated energy levels to new heights. CdM song member Sienna Schaffer vocalizes her highlight from Friday’s game: “Performing at halftime as well as anytime the team scored was my favorite part of the game because of the adrenaline rush I receive.” A special guest performance featured the Lincoln Elementary School band, bringing back nostalgic memories for CdM students who are Lincoln alumni.
Thanks to the players’ determination, hard work, and positive mindsets, Corona del Mar was able to solidify a victory, bringing their record to 4-5. The leading scorer of the second half was awarded to Garret James, who accounted for two of the three touchdowns scored in the third and fourth quarters. James shared how he and his teammate stay motivated throughout games: “We keep each other excited to continue playing by giving each other support after every play.” As the game came to a close, students and spectators cleared the stands with a renewed sense of confidence and pride, awaiting next week’s exciting match against Yorba Linda.
