Corona del Mar football looks to be up to par. The Sea King’s recent Kings Krew Football game had CdM dawning their wicker and denim or polishing their finest polo attire for a Country vs. Country Club Night at Davidson Field. The game was a smashing success, ending in a score of 51-38, CdM’s season high score. This win effectively put an end to Trabuco’s previously undefeated record.
As the stands filled with cowgirls and club members, the student section came to life as the Sea Kings wide receiver Dorsett Stecker put 14 on the board in the first quarter, the field being illuminated by the waning golden sunlight. Cowboy hats bobbed in the air and tennis skirts swayed in the wind, to crowd favorites “Sweet Caroline” and “Murder on the Dancefloor,” led by senior class president Macey Gimmond and junior Calvin Parzick—or as his adoring fans call him: DJ CAL.
The Sea Kings gained great momentum in the second quarter, putting up a whopping 21 points in just 12 minutes. With each successful play, CdM’s Kings Krew grew in size and energy. Running back Wyatt Lucas was a key component in Friday night’s success. He broke the record for most rushing yards in a single game with a grand total of 352 yards, and he scored 4 of the 7 touchdowns. Lucas shouts out some of his teammates who may not get highlighted but play a key role in all offensive success: “My linemen, Aziz Altuwaijri, Judah Snow, Anthony Hastings, Damion Zeno-Herrera, Landon Rucker, and Zach Giuliano all blocked really well, created open holes, and let me break the record.”
During ½ time, the animated crowd came to life once again as CdM’s Color Guard debuted their first performance. The sounds of roaring cheers echoed through the stadium as the color guard team introduced their unique program to hundreds of spectators. Freshman Kenna Eckenweiler shared how she was feeling prior to her first Color Guard performance: “I was very nervous, but also very excited because I have a lot of faith in my team.” When the twirling Cerulean flags returned to the Color Guards fists, the crowd erupted in cheers as their performance came to an end, and Pep Squad was welcomed to the field. Drumline and marching band—in their usual fashion—brought spirits to another level with their enticing musical beat. The night went on with a stream of guests at the Spirit Station for some game day glitter or snapping photos behind the regal Sea King and octopus cut-out photo op.
On the defensive end, Corona del Mar had quite a night. The D line had five sacks, all completed by senior Breck Clemmer. Midway through the third quarter, Max Brengal had an amazing fumble recovery that caused an ideal change of possession, allowing CdM another opportunity to score. An additional defensive highlight was Ryan Rakunas’ interception that preceded Lucas’ third TD of the evening. Sam-Reed Dickens and Tucker Murray combined for a total of 185 return yards, punctuated by Murray’s impressive 73-yarder.

Despite the traffic of the stands lightening, excitement heightened nearing the end of the 4th quarter when seniors eagerly shouted invitations for underclassmen to join the senior section. Although the crowd dwindled, the music rose to a new height, and a sea of white poms continued to glide through the air. Even as the fence was cleared of colorful posters and the music eventually died down as Parzick took his leave, CdM spirits remained high on the trek to the parking lot in preparation for CdM’s most anticipated event of the year: October 10th’s BOTB.
