On one fateful evening on November 1st, the LA Dodgers took their positions under the bright lights at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada. Not knowing what was ahead, both the Dodgers and the Blue Jays battled their hardest, executing plays that will make this World Series go down in history as one of the closest ever. The game started rough for the defending champions, with Bo Bichette, primarily a shortstop for the Blue Jays, hitting a 3 run home run in the third inning. Going into the fourth, the catcher for the Dodgers, Will Smith, ran home from third base on a fly ball by Teoscar Hernández. The teams battled hard in the fifth, but neither team scored on base hits or home runs. Finally, in the sixth, the Dodgers found a surge of momentum after Mookie Betts ran to score. Later in that inning, the Blue Jays scored one more run, putting the overall score to 4 – 2. The 7th inning stayed flat as Dodger fans started to lose hope for this last win, but that did not stop the team. With the crowd roaring in the 8th, Max Muncy hit a solo home run for the Dodgers, making the score 4-3. After that, the Blue Jays never answered. Hanging on to their lead, the Blue Jays battled hard into the ninth, with the Dodgers’ faces looking grim until Miguel Rojás hit a solo home run to keep the Dodgers’ hopes alive. In the bottom of the ninth, the Blue Jays kept the bases loaded but failed to score and win the series. Again, in the bottom of the ninth inning, Hernández and Pages had a very close catch that would have possibly made the Blue Jays score. Miguel Rojás also had a nail-biting play, keeping the Blue Jays from scoring and winning it all. The Dodgers almost won it in the tenth; they had the bases loaded and needed a sacrifice fly, but the Blue Jays held steady and maintained the tie score. Fast forward to the 11th, the tension in the air was thick as both teams were battling for the win that would mean so much to either team. Will Smith, the catcher, hit a solo home run in the top of the tenth, an electrifying moment for Dodger fans across the world. In the bottom of the eleventh, the Blue Jays were close to scoring with bases loaded until Kirk, the catcher, hit a ground ball for a double play for the Dodgers, winning the series.
Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman was asked in an interview after the game about his experience. He said, “Oh my gosh, I think that game had every single thing you could have. Just an absolutely incredible game, incredible series, a grind for both teams.” Freeman references the grind from the start of the season and the toughness it takes to show up and perform when you are the previous national champions. Coco Head, a ninth grade student, was asked about tempering the World Series. She said, “The World Series is super exciting this year. The Dodgers were so locked in, and I am very happy that they won again.” This nail-biting World Series will rewrite the history books and be remembered for many years to come.
