In two exciting, nail biting, and nerve wracking games, CdM Sea Kings girls and boys basketball crushed the Newport Harbor Sailors on Tuesday, February 4th.
The girls played an incredible game ending in a victorious score of 55-27. The game not only highlighted the battle of the bay rivalry, It was also the Sea Queens Senior night. The Seniors, Lark Walz, Kayly Honig, Sienna Bani, and Alexa Rokos all played an incredible game and have been huge attributes to the success of the team. This win over Newport Harbor brought the Sea Queens to a record of 9 wins and 3 losses, securing the girls title as league champions. The center and co-captain, Kayly Honig shares how the team was able to rally and bring home the league championship title; “After our tough loss to Hunington Beach, we needed to come together and fix our team dynamic.” She explains, “BOTB was our final challenge keeping us from the title and there was nothing that could stop us.” The girls immense success in league has brought great pride to the CdM community, and they hope to continue to triumph in the southern section CIF rounds.
Following in the girls footsteps, the boys basketball team also defeated the sailors for their second time this season. The game invoked a rollercoaster of emotion in spectators due to the back and forth lead the teams were fighting for. The boys ran away with it in the second half, closing the game out with a 20 point lead of 61-41. The blacked out student section showed up for the seakings in hopes of motivating the team to work together for a win. Senior captain, Ganon Overfelt, highlights the affects of the Kings Krew student section, “The energy in the gym is one of the main reasons we won, its like a completely different enviornment everytime we play harbor and it just got everybody hyped up.” The Sea Kings finished league with a 6 win and 6 loss record, placing them in the Division 1 southern section CIF bracket. The CdM community wishes the boys luck as they prepare to face some of the best teams in southern california.
The girls and boys triumphant wins over the sailors were perfect endings to two fun, exhilarating, and entertaining seasons. As winter sports come to a close, CdM Students have spring sports such as, swim, track and field, boys volleyball, boys golf, boys tennis, baseball, softball, as well as boys and girls lacrosse to look forward to!
