The Butterfly Migration of 2019

In the past few weeks, Southern Californians have been experiencing a strange, but not unpleasant phenomenon known as a Butterfly Migration. While these little critters have always been spotted every once in a while, they can now be seen very frequently throughout each day.

According to CNN news, the reason for this sudden outburst is because of recent weather. With the abundance of rain, there has been a large increase in plant wildlife, known as a super bloom. This attracts the butterfly population because it allows for more plants for the butterflies to lay their eggs on. More plants also means enough food to support a greater population of caterpillars.

When first spotted, the species of butterflies migrating appears to be the famous monarch butterfly. However, they are actually butterflies known as the painted ladies. These are typically smaller in size compared to monarchs. They differ slightly in shape as well.

Many wonder why this has never occurred before in their life. However, it actually happens every year. They travel from the Mexican deserts to their typical breeding ground, which is located in the Pacific Northwest. Normally, these insects keep a low profile during their migration. However, this year, their population has bloomed into the millions.

This sudden increase may also come as a surprise because according to CNN news, last year’s migration was one of the worst in about 50 years for both the painted ladies and the monarchs. However, even though the painted ladies’ population is recovering nicely, the same cannot be said for the monarchs. In the past few years, the monarch population has dropped about 86% and will continue to do so unless action is taken.

Many scientists are confused and concerned as to why the monarchs are suffering so bad, but they are certainly not complaining about how well the painted ladies are doing. CdM students are majorly enjoying the experience as well. Freshman, Katherine Wang, commented her opinion, “It is super cool to see. I’ve seen more butterflies in the past week than I have all my life. I love driving to school and watching them pass by; it’s truly magical.”

There is no better way to get into the spring spirit than with butterflies and blooming flowers!
