It has been three years since the release of Tyler the Creator’s “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST” album, and he is back with new music. This past Monday, October 28th, he dropped his seventh studio album, “CHROMAKOPIA.” Along with the release of his album, he also revealed dates for CHROMAKOPIA: THE WORLD TOUR, which starts on February 4th, 2025, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to September 4th, 2025, in Perth, WA, Australia. From speculation, the name and concept of “Chromakopia” come from the character Chroma the Great from The Phantom Tollbooth, a 1961 children’s novel. Chroma the Great is an influential conductor who creates the colors in the world with his orchestra. “CHROMAKOPIA” explores many themes across songs, such as paranoia in Noid and individuality in St. Chroma. grammy.com’s article “Breaking Down Tyler, The Creator’s ‘Chromakopia’: How Empathy, Ambivalence, and Paranoia Shaped His New Album” by Shawn Sentaro dives deeper into the numerous themes in his album while also commenting on how the album represents him as a person. “This is his album from the beginning to the end… Chromakopia shows his growth, his ambivalence, and his vision.”
The track list is 14 songs long: “St. Chroma”; “Rah Tah Tah”; “Noid”; “Darling, I”; “Hey Jane”; “I Killed You”; “Judge Judy”; “Sticky”; “Take Your Mask Off”; “Tomorrow”; “Thought I Was Dead”; “Like Him”; “Balloon”; and “I Hope You Find Your Way Home.” Despite Tyler teasing that there would be no features on this album, CHROMAKOPIA actually has 10 hidden features: Daniel Caesar (“St. Chroma”), WILLOW (“Noid”), Teezo Touchdown (“Darling, I”), Childish Gambino (“I Killed You” and “Judge Judy”), Steve Lacy (played guitar on “Judge Judy”), GloRilla (“Sticky”), Lil Wayne (“Sticky”), Sexxy Red (“Sticky”), ScHoolboy Q (“Thought I Was Dead”), and Doechii (“Balloon”).
According to Billboard.com and sophomore Zuri Agren, “Darling, I” is the best song on the album. It is described by Billboard as “one of the only moments of optimistic reprieve on the album.” Agren adds that it has an especially good melody, and she really enjoys what Teezo Touchdown adds to the song. But, sophomore Chloë Freehan seems to disagree. While she does think that every song on this album is gold, “[she loves] ‘Thought I Was Dead’ because the beat hits so hard and ScHoolboy Q is on it.”
