With the weather starting to sing a different tune and the sun starting to hit an earlier note, the fall vocal and instrumental concert took place on the crisp evening of Friday, September 20th. Fourteen performances took the big gym floor, performing two to three songs each. Starting from the second week of school, Vox Angelica, Men of Note, Notoriety, Madrigals, Percusso, Nothin’ But Treble, Camerata, Sinfonia, Academy Band, Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Academy Strings, and Drumline had all been working tirelessly to create a concert of cohesiveness, entertainment, and celebration. Throughout the night, symphonies rained down on the audience to mark the beginnings of autumn.
Angelic voices graced the risers belonging to Vox Angelica…
With a powerful rendition of “Truth” by Andrea Ramsey, Vox Angelica gave their voice life and meaning. Vox Angelica singer and freshman Madi Jackson states that “everyone put in outside work to make sure that the class time was used as rehearsal.” Such hard work and practice ultimately led to Vox Angelica’s stunning performance full of synchronization, beauty, and raw emotion. New to the CdMHS choir program, Jackson’s experience on Vox Angelica so far has been “an amazing experience. Everyone in Vox is so sweet and welcoming, especially Mrs. Martinez and Ms. Ledsinger.” Fellow Vox Angelica and three-year choir member Maria Orsi is “one of the older girls of the group, so the girls get to learn a lot from [her], but they also get to teach [her] sometimes if they know something [she doesn’t].” Orsi’s favorite performance of the night would have to be her own, and “drumline would be [her] second favorite,” remarking that her dad loved drumline” as well. Jackson, on the other hand, loved the Madrigals performance because “their energy was amazing and their harmonies were incredible.”
Magnificent madrigals make for a remarkable performance.
“Sicut Cervus” by Palestrina and “Way Over In Beulah Ln” by Stacey Gibbs were sung masterfully by CdM’s madrigal singers. Being that they are a zero-period type class that meets Monday through Friday, not just odd and even periods like most choir classes, their practice is constant, and rightfully so. Skylar Foster, a sophomore on Madrigals, recalls why she joined Madrigals by saying that “[she] wanted to be a part of a loving, silly, and fun community.” Izzy Wang, another sophomore on Madrigals, explains that “[she] joined Madrigals because [she] enjoys singing with her whole heart.”
Letting the leaves fall and the harmonious Halloween spirit in, the choir and instrumental concert drummed the first symbols of autumn. Look for future concerts showcasing CdMHS’s choir and instrumental programs on @cdmvocalmusic and @cdminstrumentalmusic on Instagram!
