Desiring to cater to students who feel the need to serve their community, the community service fair put into perspective just what kind of volunteering was offered locally. With these amicable intentions, ASB’s committee of community service was able to put on their annual community service fair dedicated to presenting organizations that provided students with bracelets, pamphlets, fliers, pens, and of course a sweet smile to invite those interested in volunteering for a good cause. Despite unfortunate weather conditions, ASB preserved through the rain and presented a new option for location; the 200 building having increased foot traffic in weather-permitting conditions such as those seen on Wednesday the 15th.

In attendance at the event were the following clubs and organizations: PAL, HALO, HRC, NHS, Down for Dance, ASB, AYS, American Red Cross, Blaze It Forward, Key Club, JCC, ENC (Ecology Center), Helping Hands, Dynamite Book Club, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Key Club is a student-led organization that provides its leaders in training with opportunities to build character, develop leadership, and provide service to those around them. Nicole Maya, a sophomore at CdM, and an active member of Key Club loved visiting each of the different tables and participating in the different activities they each had but, “the key club activity had people write their favorite traits about themselves…” which to Maya “…brings up the necessary issue of mental health.”

Aligning with CdM’s core values the community service fair mostly resembles “CdM’s core value of empathy which requires [students to put themselves] into the shoes of people who may be less fortunate and to assist them in any way [they] can”, believes Jillian Kaufman, a freshman on ASB’s community service committee.

Laura Wagner, a sophomore on PAL articulates that “it’s important to get the CdM community involved in activities from different clubs, especially for incoming freshman and sophomores who hope to explore topics they may be passionate about and find clubs that suit them.” Continuing to support this message and its connection to the CdM community, Kaufman vocalizes, “advocating for causes [students] believe in and starting a movement for positive change can begin at the high school level.” With these aspiring words, Kaufman mentions, “ASB will continue to hold this fair each year to encourage students to take part in community service projects.”
