Learning a new language is a fun and educational experience that can prove very useful in people’s everyday lives. Corona del Mar High School offers French, Mandarin, American Sign, and Spanish classes. Baby Santovao is a bilingual sophomore. She speaks English and Spanish. She believes that “knowing multiple languages can be useful for future jobs,” and she is right. Being bilingual can help to understand customers or clients and other people in the workplace better. Bilinguals can also have the opportunity to work for a foreign company and travel for work.

Sophomore Jack Li says that he thinks “knowing multiple languages is helpful for everyone around the world.” An additional perk of knowing another language is that people can experience more when they travel to other countries getting to be more immersed in the culture of wherever they go. While learning a language can certainly improve the mind, it can also improve students’ academic lives. Being bilingual is proven to possibly increase grades in math and English. It may also lead to a higher score on the SAT. More specifically, teenagers learning a foreign language can study abroad for college to enhance their skills in a fast-paced environment. Studying abroad is a wonderful choice for those who want to experience another culture fully, and have an impressive resume for future jobs. Aseret Sosa is a senior and she thinks that the best reason to learn a language is so that people “can communicate more easily with others and be more comfortable and feel more connected when talking,” which is especially true for those who want to make connections with people from around the globe.

Not only is being bilingual good for travelers, but it is also good for the brain. The act of learning a new language can provide better problem-solving skills and allows people to multitask more efficiently. It can improve memory and delay the onset of dementia, by giving the brain more mental flexibility. Speaking several languages also develops new parts of the brain which has proven to lead to strengthened concentration and creativity, as well as better listening skills.
