On Monday, November 1, CdM Girls Golf played the first round of team CIF. The match was held at Soule Park in Ojai. The course was moderately easy; the wide fairways and large greens proved to be forgiving. Two girls staked out the course the day before the tournament and reported that the bunkers were difficult and the greens were fast. With this insider information, the Sea Kings played well.

It was a shotgun start which means that each group would start on a different hole, so they finished at the same time. Anabelle Taylor and Sienna Stefano started at hole eight – the hardest hole on the course. Taylor‘s nerves got the best of her, and she was unhappy with her score on the whole. Stefano had a more optimistic outlook and remarked, “I think it’s good to start on this hole, you know? Get it out of the way.” In the end, the hard holes and the easy holes balance each other out. Olivia Knowles shot 78 (six over) which was the best score out of the CdM girls. She said about her game, “Overall I think I did well and met my expectations, but in the moment I was like: ‘Gah! That could’ve been a birdie!’” Anabelle Taylor and Siena Stephano felt satisfied with their score shooting 82 and 96 respectively. Chloe Nishanian, Lisa Wang, and Bailey Kuo thought they could’ve done better, and they are sure they’ll come back next year with lower scores. Coach Starkweather was very proud of the team, “it’s been so long since we’ve been here, and I think you all did your best.”

As far as the overall scoring, each team plays six players, but only counts the five best scores. First place had a total of 400 with one of the scores being 69 (three under). Second place had 426. Third place had 434. Corona del Mar finished with 433 strokes, one away from possibly continuing to the next round. One thing is for sure: CdM finished the season strong.
