As of May 25th, the global coronavirus cases has reached 5.5 million and the global death count has reached almost 350,000. However, 2.3 million people have recovered and the current active cases are 2.8 million. The United States of America is currently still the leading country in the total number of cases of 1.7 million people. Following the USA is Brazil with 364,000 cases, Russia third with 345,000 cases, Spain fourth with 283,000 cases, and the United Kingdom fifth with 260,000 cases. Out of the top 5 countries with the most case counts, Russia has the least amount of deaths reported in ratio to the amount of cases reported. Some critics point out that the case to fatality ratio is low in Russia, because they do not count deaths from pneumonia, which is considered in some cases to be brought on from the coronavirus, towards the death count. On the other hand, others say that it is just the sudden increase in testing for the virus and that with more infections uncovered, the mortality rate declines proportionally.

In the USA, the coronavirus case to fatality ratio is quite high compared to other countries. Out of the 1.7 million total cases, total deaths have reached almost 100,000. USA is also leading with the most current active cases of almost 1.2 million and with the most patients in critical condition at 17,000. However, on a more positive note, 452,000 people infected with the coronavirus in the United States have already recovered. By the States, New York is still leading with a case count of almost 373,000 and death count of almost 30,000. California dropped down to fourth place with almost 95,000 cases and almost 4,000 deaths.

However, as of now, most California universities are leaning towards not fully reopening their campuses in the fall and continuing most classes online. Senior Alyssa Cairns commented on the matter, saying “I think that California Universities made the right choice staying closed in the Fall. Although it is hard for students to not go back to school, online classes are the safest way for students to continue learning”.
