It was a nail-baiting afternoon on Wednesday the 5th for the CdM boys varsity soccer team, with their final game, against Los Alamitos Griffins, which would determine who would be league champions. The Sea Kings were fired up to bring it home and celebrate senior tribute night, as CdM’s cheering families and parents were brimming with enthusiasm and spirit.
The CdM boys varsity soccer team played brilliantly, connecting passes, communicating well, and keeping Los Alamitos on their toes. Left wing Hassan Selim used his agility and speed driving up the ball, taking shots on goal. CdM’s passing finally secured a goal for the Seakings, from Aidan Holmes to Torgelson 16 minutes into the first half. Los Alamitos was pushing hard to score in the first half, but the Sea King’s defensive line and goalie Nik Darrough, would not relent. CdM’s right wing Will Little, corralled the long passes across the field, as Los Alamitos defense played catch up. At half time senior Walter Korbler was manning the goal. The Griffins brought out all their ammunition to tie the game in the second half. Both teams were playing a physical game of pushing, pulling jerseys, and locking arms. Los Alamitos offense was making more shots on goal, putting back to back pressure on Korbler. With only 17 minutes remaining, the Griffins valiant efforts secured a goal to tie the game.
The game was pushed into overtime. Nerves were fraying as a second overtime was played with the teams tied 1-1. Both teams were battling aggressively to come in as first in the league. With less than a minutes remaining in overtime, CdM took a calamitous loss, as Los Alamitos’ goalie’s free kick from center line garnered the Griffins win at 2-1. Senior Walter Korbler said this about the game, “We came to this well prepared and ready to go. This entire league season the games have been very tight. We’ve done a good job capitalizing on our opportunities. Tonight we were a bit unlucky. We are a united team and will rally back stronger than before.” CdM Sea Kings will now move on to battle it out for CIF championship after placing second in the league. They will be playing against Servite on Wednesday the 12th for division one CIF.
