The twenty-first century has shone light on some of the world’s most interesting, intriguing, and peculiar fashion trends in the midst of modernization. The past year and the beginning of this year have witnessed some of fashion’s most interesting and well-developed crazes, from slide shoes to platform sneakers to the now famous chunky sneakers.

Brands like Adidas and Fila have birthed this trend through shoes such as the Yung-1 or Falcon sneakers to the well-known Disruptors. Each of these shoes range from seventy to over one hundred dollars, where more expensive ones may range from prices a little under two-hundred dollars.

Chunky sneakers have extended to beyond the sports and athletics scene, entering the designer world through brands such as Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, and most famous, Balenciaga. Various fashion influencers around the world have stated that the Balenciaga Triple S sneakers, which range anywhere from seven hundred to eight hundred dollars, to be a closet necessity. Not only does the chunky look resonate with thousands of those who can afford these designer sneakers, but it has resonated with other contemporary brands to mock the look of such sneakers.

The chunky sneaker look dates back to the 90s, which witnessed a rise in hip hop culture and change to the classic fashion scene. 90s fashion is being rebirthed in the modern era, with twists from the modern youth’s personal style. From Los Angeles to Paris, this chunky sneaker look can be spotted on major celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and more.

Chunky sneakers that double ankle weight and boost one’s height have even reached the students at CdM, from fashion enthusiasts to those who are simply looking for a new pair of kicks.

According to Erin Bunch of Well+Good, a local blog, “the trend provides an opportunity to expand your sneaker collection beyond minimalist styles.”

2019 has witnessed a continuation of this sneaker trend, with designers and brands around the world releasing such sneakers in abundance. It is simply a matter of time until humans differentiate whether this trend will be short-lived or long-lasting.
