On Friday, February 21, Tao Porchon-Lynch, the world’s oldest yoga teacher, died at the age of 101. Porchon was acknowledged as the world’s oldest yoga teacher by Guinness World Records in 2012. Living for more than 100 years, Porchon lived to experience many amazing events. According to Lohud news, she joined her uncle at the age of 12 to march alongside Gandhi in the Salt March, and later took part in a Martin Luther King Jr. march.
Porchon lived righteously through her mantra, “There’s nothing that you cannot do.”  An inspiration to many, Porchon symbolized the beauty in aging while never letting it hold her back. As she told TODAY, “I don’t believe in age. When people ask me about age, I tell them to look at all the trees around them. They’re hundreds of years old. They may look as if they’re dying at the moment, but they’re not; they’re recycling themselves. And in a couple of months, they’re going to be reborn again.”
More than just a yoga teacher, Porchon had received 750 first place awards as a competitive dancer by the age of 87, appeared on NBC’s America’s Got Talent at the age of 96, and taught eight yoga classes a week up until her passing. She also inspired others through her powerful words and messages. As yogi and senior Marbella Marlo stated, “To understand that yoga has been practiced the same way for so many years, furthers my gratitude and appreciation for it. Although it is so sad to lose such a devoted practitioner, her legacy will live on for many years to come.”
While it always sad to see someone pass, it is important to remember their positive legacy that will continue to live on. As Porchon once told The Journal News on the eve of her birthday, “To me, 101 is natural. It doesn’t scare me. I awake with the sun and think of all my many friends and that makes me ready to know that you never put anything off for tomorrow because tomorrow never comes.”
