On Friday night, January 10th at 7:00 in our big gym, Corona del Mar’s Boys Varsity Basketball team played against Laguna Beach High School. This was the boys first pink out game of the year. In the first quarter, Sophomore Scott Truninger made a defensive rebound which set up his teammate for a three-pointer. Laguna Beach started strong and by the middle of the second quarter, they had already built an 8 point lead. In the second quarter, one of the highlights of the game arrived when Senior Jack McKenna hit a very deep three. At half-time, the cheerleaders performed a great show. Cheerleader and Freshman Maddie Braun said “cheerleading for basketball is fun because we can support our school, do lots of cheers and stunts as well as talk to friends.” She continued, saying “pink outs are fun because the gym always looks so cool with all the posters and it is interesting to see all the bright pink shirts in the crowd.” In the third and fourth quarters, Efe Gucolglu, the only freshman on the team, was on fire, helping the team chip away at Laguna’s lead. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, and the Sea Kings lost by 15 with a final score of 47-62. Freshman, Samantha Kauffman said she enjoyed the game because “The whole CdM side was packed which showed CdM’s immense support for the athletes at our school.” Boys Basketball’s next home game is Friday, January 17th against Newport Harbor. Go Support our Sea Kings at their Battle of the Bay game.
