A Preview of The Drowsy Chaperone

From March 28th through the 31st, the Corona del Mar theater department will be putting on the acclaimed Broadway show The Drowsy Chaperone. The show, which is both a parody and panegyric of musical theater of old, features an aging, agoraphobic “Man in Chair”, who serves as a narrator as he plays his favorite record, a recording of the fictional play “The Drowsy Chaperone”. The show highlights and commentates on the stereotypes and cliches of Broadway productions in early 20th century. The musical portion of The Drowsy Chaperone takes place in the 1920’s, but the Man in Chair lives in modern times and is on the audience’s side of the fourth wall. the audience sees The Drowsy Chaperone taking place on stage, where the actors are unaware of the audience.

The story of The Drowsy Chaperone includes a wedding-gone-wrong between a young Broadway Star, Janet Van der Graaf and an oil tycoon, Robert Martin, played by Sydney Cohen and Josh Flores. The cast also includes aging hostess Mrs. Tottendale (Phoebe Alva) and her servant the Underling (Tom Eastmond), anxious best man George (Arya Samini), the Toledo brothers (Sierra Stoliar and Lucas Phillips), the self-proclaimed king of romance Adolfo (AJ Plumb), Janet’s chaperone and the namesake of the play, the Drowsy Chaperone (Grace Shackelford), producer Victor Feldzieg (Stephen Weinstock), and Kitty, just Kitty (Jaycie Carter), and the Man in Chair, played by Tristan Neal.

Enjoy all of the twists and turns of this entertaining and humorous musical by watching the performance on one of the following show dates: Thursday, March 28 at 7 pm, Friday, March 29 at 7 pm, Saturday, March 30 at 2 pm and 7 pm, and Sunday, March 31 at 2 pm.
