On July 15, 1997, Gianni Versace was shot in front of his house on Miami Beach. His killer, was Andrew Cunanan, a private school educated favored child with a genius IQ. The Netflix series,American Crime Story, debuted its second season,’The Assassination of Gianni Versace,’ last January and since then has caught the attention of Netflix viewers in search of a new series.
The season not only delves into the story behind the murder of Versace, but the stories that lay behind his other victims. Jeffrey Trail, David Madson, Lee Miglin, and William Reece, are the four other deaths that Cunanan is held accountable for. Other than his victims, the shows viewers also got a look into the background behind Cunanan who held his true identity behind the lies he told those he encountered.
Darren Criss, seen in both Glee and American Horror Story, is the actor behind Cunanan’s role in the show. Contrary to his role in Glee, Criss although challenging, Criss embarked in his new role by channelling a darker side of himself to best portray a serial killer. In an interview with Deadline, Criss stated,”People wait their entire careers for something this juicy to come along. I am thrilled to be here.”
Although a sycophant, Cunanan was fabulist and in order to successfully kill his victims he needed to be convincing. Cunanan would stay up night and day composing himself of the perfect backstory and teaching himself about the fashion industry. He’d tailor himself into the man his victims wanted him to be and in that way Criss was able to relate to him. Criss told Deadline,”I am totally a people pleaser…I want to make people happy.”
Other than Cunanan’s exquisite performance in the series, the shows cinematography also brought the story to life. From Donatella Versace’s eye catching dress at Vogue Magazine’s 100th anniversary party to Versace’s mansion on Miami Beach, the shows beautiful and accurate sceneries helped its audience paint a better picture of how the story played out.
The show brought to life a story that brought devastation to the families of many. With its amazing cast and brilliant cinematography, ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace,’ did not disappoint.
