The 76th annual Golden Globes were held at the Beverly Hilton hotel on January 6th. The award ceremony for top movies and television shows of the past year was hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg. Huge Hollywood celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Anne Hathaway, Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, and Bill Murry all attended the event.

The main award for the night, best motion picture drama, was won by the movie Bohemian Rhapsody starring Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury. The biographical film focuses on the British rock band Queen, and follows the life of singer Freddie Mercury’s from him joining the band in 1970, to the bands Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium in 1985. Senior Katie Langley enjoyed, “ learning about the backstory and struggles of the band queen. I felt the performances were truly authentic and realistic for the time period the movie was set in. I had always been a fan of Queen but never knew about the hardships the members had to overcome. Rami Malek did a tremendous job portraying Freddie Mercury and embodying his vivacious energy.” Along with the movie winning best motion picture drama, Rami Malek won best actor in a drama motion picture. This was his first win at the Golden Globes.

Another movie that won big was Greenback winning three awards: best supporting actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy motion picture, screenplay of a motion picture. The Golden globes are a staple in Hollywood as a way to honor the top film stars in the nation.
