Graffiti is a very controversial topic. It has been known to cause many arguments but has also inspired many people to action. When people think of graffiti most of the time they think of vandalism and gangs. And it is true, the LAPD states that “The purpose of gang graffiti is to glorify the gang.” What this basically means is that gang graffiti is used to scare others and make it known that the area they are in is part of the gang’s turf. The problem is that most of the public get confused between graffiti and street art. The technical term for graffiti is “writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place” as stated by googles dictionary. Street art is “usually created as a means to convey a message connected to political ideas, social commentary, or confrontation” as stated by study.com. 

Now, there are many famous street artists that have made political art all around the world. For example, Banksy is an anonymous man from Bristol, United Kingdom. He is widely known for his satirical art that he puts in public places. One of his most famous art pieces is a painting of chimps wearing placards saying “Laugh now, but one day we’ll be in charge.” This is a message against politics saying that future leaders won’t know how to lead. 

Street artists have even been known to inspire people to action. On abandoned factories, street artists have been known to draw a window. And in that window is a picture of nature such as the Sahara desert or the Amazon rainforest. When people see this contrast between factories and nature they could get inspired to make a change to benefit the world. And if enough people see this type of street art, maybe the world could change.
